Radiography – Course 2 Risks & Hazards, Radiation protection and the Law

Introduction

On successful completion of this course:

1 Hour verifiable CPD will be awarded – In line with the new 2018 EGDC verifiable standards. A certificate will be issued to the learner on completion of a short assessment. You will also receive a Reflection log sheet. This allows you to reflect on your learning experience and can be used with the certificate as verifiable GDC evidence. You will need to gain 80% of the total marks. To help us to continue to improve future training and course structure, you will be requested to complete a short feedback form.

Why complete this on-line course?
Radiography and radiation protection are a GDC and health & safety recommended subject. (If you are qualified to actually take radiographs, then CPD in this subject is a requirement by the IR(ME)R regulations). Radiation is dangerous and therefore essential to understand. By acknowledging the danger, hazards and risks that are involved will allow us to gain an understanding of safety measures and why they must be put in place and adhered to. This will also explain the importance of the legislation and guidelines.

Course Aims, Objectives and Outcomes

AIMS:

The aim of this course is to improve the learners understanding in aspects involved with quality assurance and control while up- dating learners knowledge on relevant aspects of the IR(ME)R2017 and IRR17 regulations.

The course will address risks, hazards, safety and radiation protection and the how learners can work within the law and follow safety guidance.

OBJECTIVES:

• Recognise the different faults that can occur on a film
• Summarise quality assurance and describe quality control measures
• Explore the risks and hazards  associated with dental radiography
• Review Ionising Radiation Regulations and radiation protection guidelines
• Define safety procedures in dental radiography.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

After successfully completing this course, learners will be able to:

• Prevent faults happening when producing or processing an image
• Take part in Quality Assurance and Quality Control measures in dental practice
• Correctly participate in daily, weekly, monthly and yearly checks and procedures that are required, in relation to radiography in dental practice
• Outline the main components of Ionising Radiation Regulations IRR1999 and IR(ME)R 2017
